Hurricane Beryl was the earliest-forming Category 5 Atlantic hurricane on record ever. Being located in Rockland, MA means we are fortunately far from the worst of this storm – but there will be other storms. Not all storms are hurricanes, but a storm doesn’t need to be a hurricane in order to cause damage to your storefront windows. Massachusetts has an average of 14 tropical storms each and every year.
What kind of damage can tropical storms do to your business windows?
Scientists categorize storms based on many factors, including windspeed. In the case of a tropical storm, you’re looking at weather events with maximum sustained winds of 39 to 74 miles an hour. These strong winds can move objects with great force. What we have seen, more than once, in our capacity as a Rockland commercial glass company, is situations where something as simple as construction debris can be smashed into your store front windows so hard that the glass completely shatters.
The unpredictable nature of tropical storms and the potential of severe damage explain why many small business owners take steps to protect their storefront windows in advance of tropical storms. However, this doesn’t always happen, and sometimes, even the best protection is not as strong as the ferocity of the storm.
So that’s the situation where you have the obvious damage – broken, missing, or visibly cracked glass. It’s also important to understand that not all damage is immediately apparent, especially when you’re in the overwhelming situation of post-storm damage assessment.
When circumstances permit, do a closer inspection of the windows. You’re looking for smaller cracks, chips, or other damage, damage to the window seals, damage to the frame. Additionally, damage to the window can compromise the effectiveness of your security system. Take steps to make sure everything is working properly.
