4 Things You Need to Do Before Having New Windows Installed – Important Tips for Parents & Pet Owners

July 9, 2024 by collegetown

We specialize in window installation in South Shore, MA, but these tips are applicable to anyone who is having replacement windows installed in the home they are currently living in. To keep your family safe and protect your property from damage, please do the following four tasks before the window installation crew arrives.

#1: Secure the room so children & pets can not enter the space.

Even the most well-behaved children and animals can respond unpredictably to seeing the old window being removed from the home. Some will take advantage of the opening in your home to escape to the outdoors, which could be very unsafe and is definitely stressful. For everyone’s peace of mind, children and pets should be kept away from the window installation proect.

#2: Deactivate the alarm system associated with the windows that are being replaced.

If you’re not sure how to do this, contact your security system company. They’ll be able to walk you through the necessary steps, as well as telling you how to reactivate the alarm system properly once your new windows are installed.

#3: Remove furniture and fragile items from the area in front of and nearby the window that is being replaced.

Of course all window installers try to be very careful while doing their job, but accidents can and do happen. Minimize the chances of them happening to your stuff by removing furniture and fragile items from the area in front of and nearby the window that is being replaced. This includes glass-framed pictures on the wall, as well as any knickknacks or ornaments you may have in the windowsill area.

#4: Put dropcloths over everything you don’t want getting dusty.

Installing new windows can generate some dust. It’s a very good idea to cover your furniture and possessions with protective tarps or dropcloths. If you have a birdcage or aquarium in that room, please consult with your vet and take appropriate precautions to protect your animals from dust ahead of time. Most installations are accomplished in just a few hours, and then you will be able to have your home back to normal.
