Should I Replace Vinyl Siding With Vinyl Siding or Something Else?

September 26, 2023 by collegetown

“It’s pretty obvious that the vinyl siding on my house is past its prime,” Kate said. “There’s some storm damage from last winter, the boards seem to be sagging here and there, and the color is just absolutely washed out. It’s time to replace it, but I’m not sure with what. Should I replace vinyl siding with vinyl siding, or is there some other option I should know about?”

Vinyl Siding Upgrades: What’s Right for Your Family

When Kate was asked what her priorities are for this renovation, she stated:

Strong color – the house should look vibrant and alive, no matter what type of exterior is chosen

Affordability – the budget for this upgrade was average to slightly above average

Quick Project – from start to finish, this renovation must happen in 4 months tops

With those priorities in mind, let’s talk about replacing vinyl siding with vinyl siding. This is the most common choice people make, due in large part to how affordable vinyl siding is compared to wooden clapboard siding. Vinyl siding is available in a true rainbow of color options, and has been formulated to stay color true and vibrant even through years and years in direct sunlight. Vinyl siding is easily available and to find an expert vinyl siding installer nearby just takes a simple online search.

But vinyl siding is not the only option. Wooden clapboard siding is another exterior option popular in this part of the South Shore. The cost of wooden siding vs vinyl siding is significant. Wooden siding costs more than three times as much per sq ft installed.

In terms of color, wooden clapboard siding can be any color you want to paint it. And repaint it. And repaint it. Choosing wooden clapboard siding is choosing a lifetime of painting or paying someone to paint for you. Availability of wooden siding is generally good, although the pandemic did show us issues can arise in any supply chain.

With that information, Kate chose vinyl. What would you choose? Every homeowner has their own priorities, but vinyl siding does make a lot of people happy.
